Social Disconnection Reflected in the Cold Attitudes of Christians
The word love appears countless times in the Bible. We are taught to love ourselves and our neighbors with the love we have received from God.
Love is a moral practice that calls upon both our intellect and our emotions. It requires us to understand others, restrain our own desires, and sometimes put others before ourselves even when doing so comes at a personal cost. In this sense, perfect love is a virtue that imperfect human beings struggle to fully embody. Christianity finds an example of such love in the cross of Jesus Christ.
Love may be one of the most difficult things for human beings to understand and practice. Our will is easily shaken, our emotions change, and even our good intentions toward others can collapse when our own interests are at stake.
But this does not mean we should give up pursuing genuine love. On the contrary, when we continually strive to love others despite our imperfections, both individuals and communities can discover a deeper kind of joy.
Even amid a flood of cold, impersonal knowledge, we must keep rowing with the oars of our emotions. As we journey toward love, we must not remain enclosed within our own worlds. We must reach out to others.
Today, many people who identify themselves as Christians possess extensive knowledge of the Bible. Yet it is not always easy to tell where that knowledge ultimately leads. When we observe their relationships and everyday behavior, however, we sometimes encounter something unsettling.
We see jealousy, envy, dishonesty, and exclusion standing out more prominently than kindness, mercy, and generosity.
Of course, people’s attitudes are shaped not only by their personalities but also by their social environments and personal experiences. We cannot solve these problems simply by condemning individuals.
Nevertheless, Christians must continually examine their own hearts and guard against becoming hardened toward others. This is not because we are perfect, but because we have been loved by God despite our imperfections.
Perhaps it is time for Christians to turn their attention beyond the walls of the church.
Rather than continually exchanging elaborate words and ideas as though trying to prove the strength of their faith, Christians need to return to the everyday world where they live alongside people who do not share their beliefs.
There, they should listen to others rather than emphasize their own knowledge, extend a hand before trying to prove themselves right, and quietly practice love rather than merely explain it.
And it is through these relationships that they should bear witness to God’s love.
The depth of our faith cannot be measured solely by how much we know about the Bible. We must also ask how that knowledge transforms our hearts and what kind of fruit it produces in the way we treat others.
Those who have received God’s love should not allow that love to stop with them. When the words we share inside the church extend into the lives we lead outside it, our faith begins to live and move in our everyday world.
